Last week there was some discussion in The Lincoln County News office about the second major hurricane-relief effort to start up in the Twin Villages in as many weeks.
The pessimists among us were of the mind that the efforts would compete with each other and ultimately detract from each other’s success. How many hurricane-relief efforts could one small community support?
The pessimists among us are gladly eating their words after the first such effort ended abruptly … because it literally couldn’t fit any more donations! See “Local effort collects 48,000 pounds of supplies for hurricane relief” on the front page.
The generosity of our little community never ceases to amaze. Lincoln County always punches above its weight when it’s time to help our neighbors, whether our neighbors next door, our fellow Americans, or our fellow humans anywhere in the world.
The hurricane-relief effort at the American Legion involved an incredible number of volunteer hours to organize the effort, man the trailer, and load donations, as well as financial support from countless businesses and residents.
A second major effort is underway to aid those suffering in Florida and Texas. You can help with the simple purchase of a raffle ticket or three at one of three downtown Damariscotta businesses. See the same article on the front page for details.
We know this effort will be a big success.
We are proud to call Lincoln County home and to live in a place where people care so deeply for their fellow man, regardless of where he needs help.
