The sacrifices made by the men and women who have died while serving this country is a noble act and one that should be honored.
America’s Memorial Day is a break from the daily labors to pay respects to those who have given their life so that we can enjoy the privilege to pursue life, liberty, and happiness.
While Americans remember our fallen heroes, whether that’s around the grill with loved ones, lining the paraded streets, or visiting burial places, let’s bear in mind the duty that falls upon us to make us worthy of their sacrifice.
It means taking our freedom and investing in the community by voting, attending public meetings, and working to make the community a better place or enact change.
Here at The Lincoln County News we have the immense privilege to sit in our select board meetings, school committee discussions, and the laundry list of other municipal meetings that are small and important cogs in the machinery of this nation’s function.
On Monday, we encourage all to attend the parades, take a moment of silence, and remember all who have made the sacrifice to ensure you can stand around a grill with people you love.
Once the day passes and work resumes, we urge the people of Lincoln County to honor the legacy of Memorial Day by participating in the acts that make democracy work locally: attending your select board meetings, voting, speaking up, or participating however best suits you.
The old saying tells us that our actions speak more than our words, so let’s say the most about those who gave their lives by taking our own action and getting involved in a community that couldn’t have prospered without the shade of their sacrifice.
