This week we bid farewell to our 2018 summer interns, Johanna Neeson and Joelle Troiano.
Johanna, our news intern, will return to Colby College in Waterville for her junior year. Joelle, our sports intern, will return to Williams College in Massachusetts for her junior year.
The internships at The Lincoln County News provide benefits to the interns and the newspaper.
The interns have an opportunity to gain firsthand experience in community journalism. Whether they learn they should choose a different career or they learn they would rather do nothing else, the experience informs their choices as they continue their education and enter the workforce. The internships give them some practical experience with things like deadlines and (yikes!) editors.
The internships benefit the newspaper because they allow us to cover more ground during the busy summer season, and to cover events we might not cover at all otherwise.
But we offer internships because we care about the development of the next generation of community journalists. If an internship at The Lincoln County News helps steer one student toward a career in journalism, with us or anyone else, the investment will be well worthwhile.
Both of our interns made significant contributions to the newspaper this summer, including of front-page stories.
Our favorite piece by Johanna was about the happy end to a Newcastle girl’s cancer treatment, while some of our favorite work by Joelle were her features on a whimsical family golf tournament and on the history and uncertain future of a hiking group.
We wish Johanna and Joelle all the best as they return to their studies.
If you know a college student who would like to intern with us, tell them about us!
We hire at least one intern every summer. We prefer to have a junior or senior in a journalism or related program, but will consider other applicants.
The interns earn minimum wage, which will go up to $11 next year, plus mileage reimbursement. They must have a driver’s license and their own reliable vehicle, and they must be available on weekends.
Start and end dates are flexible, but the internships generally begin in mid- to late May and end in late August.
