We count 15 weeks between Memorial and Labor Day 2015. One hundred and two days, as a matter of fact, between our publication date this week and Labor Day, which falls on Sept. 7 this year.
For those of us who live here, summer is the annual jewel in our seasonal crown. The camps are open, our friends and families from away have returned, every business in business has their shingle out, and whatever you like to do this side of winter sports, somewhere in this state there is an opportunity to do it.
The great secret of Maine is the best times to be here are actually the less popular times of the year. During the height of summer, it can be hard to appreciate the quaint beauty of the Midcoast when you have been idling in traffic for 45 minutes.
Still, while you can a get a traffic jam anywhere, there are comparatively few places in the world you can buy and eat a freshly cooked lobster within sight of the lobster boat that caught it that morning.
As we all know, week in week out, there is literally no end to the news you can use to stress yourself out. Bad news does not stop just because the weather is good, but bad news is no reason not to appreciate the good things in life, and there are no two ways about it, summer in Maine is one of those really good things.
All summer long there are festivals and suppers, fundraising events, foot races, nature hikes, learning opportunities, the list goes on and on and on … You would literally have to make a serious effort to get through a Lincoln County summer without doing something fun.
Soon enough the kids will be back in school, the camps will be shuttered, and we’ll have the state to ourselves again. Every season in Maine has its own charms, but for now they can wait. Summer has the stage.
Be safe out there.
