Back in 1989, Diane and I moved to Damariscotta from Florida during the coldest and snowiest December Maine had experienced in years. As we pulled our Ryder rental truck into the “Winter Wonderland” that was to be our rental home on Chapman St., we couldn’t move through the two feet or so of snow that blocked the circular driveway.
Luckily after a few minutes, we spotted a pickup with a plow at the top of the street and we were able to wave the driver down. We asked if he could plow out our driveway for us and he agreed.
After plowing, we asked the still unknown driver what we owed him. He introduced himself “Hi, I’m Bob Reny,” and said we didn’t owe him anything since he owned the department store in town and he figured we would be giving him lots of business.
With that he drove away and truer words were never spoken about our supporting his business to this day. Thanks, Bob, for a great welcome to Maine.
