To the Editor:
It is unfortunate that Mr. Craig Elliot felt compelled to send a rant to the LCN (“Is this the change Obama promised?” LCN, 2/15/15. Page 4), just because one young man and his hard working family pursuing the American dream were able to acquire affordable healthcare.
The family he refers to, the Ikards, recently moved to Maine because they believed they would have a better quality of life for themselves and their child. These are responsible people working several jobs adding to the state’s economy (and paying into social security).
Instead of welcoming these folks and feeling pleased (as I did) they were able to get affordable health insurance, Mr. Elliot decided to pen an angry, inaccurate, and erroneous political narrative.
I have always wondered why some people feel more entitled than others. Apparently, it’s OK for Mr. Elliot and his wife to receive Social Security (a government program that one could argue is somewhat socialistic), but it’s not OK for Mr. Ikard and his family to be entitled to affordable healthcare under the Affordable Care Act?
Like Mr. Elliot (and many other seniors), I also worked all my life, long hours and on some weekends. I am 62, and look forward to receiving Social Security at age 66.
Collectively, we should all wish the best for any hardworking person or family that can find a better way to save money, whether on groceries or healthcare!
I do not wish to cast dispersions on anyone’s character, after all, we are all entitled to our opinions, but after reading Mr. Elliot’s letter to the editor he presented himself as nothing more than a curmudgeon.
I wish the Ikard family congratulations on their new healthcare and a warm welcome to Maine!
