To the Editor:
This is to salute Liz Matta, the Director of Band at Lincoln Academy, and thank her for her recent spirit of cooperation and understanding. On Sun., Dec. 6, Midcoast Dance had scheduled its Holiday Show for 2 p.m. As it turned out, Ms. Matta had also planned a band concert on that same afternoon at 3 p.m.
The result would have been that several young people would have to make a difficult choice whether to play in the band’s concert or dance in the Holiday Show. Fortunately, for all concerned, Ms. Matta contacted Midcoast Dance and offered to move the concert to 1 p.m. if Midcoast Dance would agree to reschedule the Holiday Show to 4 p.m.
It’s obvious that Ms. Matta clearly understood that these students who worked extremely hard, both at the band and at the dance studio, should not have to choose between the two.
On Friday, Dec. 11, we attended the Lincoln Academy assembly to watch several of our dance students perform. To our pleasant surprise, three different versions of Lincoln Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ms. Matta, were also on the program. The entire music program was incredibly wonderful, with many students given the opportunity to perform solos.
The Academy should be rightfully proud of its music program, which has come a very long way in recent years. It amazed us to see the confidence these students have developed.
