To the Editor:
The handwriting is on the wall. The economy is horrible. Federal and state budgets are going to be sliced, which will have a major impact on small towns. Newcastle’s administrative budget has exploded in the last few years and is out of line with other small towns its size.
I will be asking budgeters, and possibly proposing through petition, cuts to the following: reduction of fire chief and town administrator positions to three-fifths time, elimination of the position of paid road commissioner, return of the town attorney to an hourly rate from a retainer.
This is a starting point to return town government to a sensible size, which I believe will not impact its effectiveness.
