To the Editor:
I would like to bring to your attention what you will be voting on March 31.
Because there were not many people at the March 19 Public Hearing, I want to make sure that residents know what they are voting on, as the language on the town warrant is so misleading.
Article 37 on the Jefferson Town Warrant asks you to “approve property tax levy limit of $0…” On its face $0 looks like they don’t want to increase your property tax. Well guess what folks, this does allow them to raise your taxes and it won’t go down next year even if they don’t need it.
The discussion at public hearing was that basically the town officials have overspent for years and years and now there is little in reserve. So instead of cutting expenses and living within their means, they want to raise your taxes.
I find this kind of overspending from public officials to be an outrage, especially considering the latest economic picture. Even for those of you who may be able to afford a rise in your tax bill, consider all Jefferson’s residents, do you think all of your neighbors can afford more taxes?
Do you want to see more Jefferson homes foreclosed? We have the opportunity right now to send a message that the “bucks stop here”. I urge all Jefferson residents to vote “No” on Article 37.
