To the Editor:
While sitting at a local coffee shop here in South Bristol on Sunday morning reading the Sunday paper I was stunned to find a letter to the paper stating that the State of Maine has wasted time and money on the design of our new bridge.
The writer thinks the new bridge ruins the character of the village by using a monstous lift design. Approximately 100 years ago South Bristol had a lift bridge in the same location. I bet nobody complained about it then.
The present bridge was built in the 1930s and has outlived its lifespan. It is constantly needing repairs. Construction on a new bridge is scheduled to start next year. Townspeople will be anxious to see that happen. The new design will also be less expensive to build and maintain over its lifespan.
So, I guess we will be going back to the way life in town was a hundred years ago: much simpler and cheaper.
