To the Editor:
Round Pond villagers and lovers of Round Pond enthusiastically supported the Save the Lupine Field campaign during the Fourth of July parade!
It was heartwarming to see the parade goers cheering and donating to the marchers (including my four grandchildren!) who were carrying beautiful banners and placards with the theme of “What would Miss Rumphius do?”
Alan Davis led the group with “Waterfront for All!” My grandson Otis was so proud to come back with a $100 bill in his basket! Parade goers gave donations, took pledge envelopes, bought hand printed lupine towels, T-shirts, and raffle tickets for the lovely lupine watercolor donated by Leilani Havens of Louds Island. Tickets are available at Granite Hall Store.
Our family’s love of this meadow goes back over 30 years. We enjoyed walking down the path and climbing on the rocks. In 2002 the Ulin’s graciously allowed my daughter Mary and son-in-law Tom to be married in the field. The tradition of walks through the field continues today with our four grandchildren.
The lupine field on Northern Point Road is the last open property on the harbor and is slated for development unless it is protected by this initiative.
Round Pond Village Improvement Society and Medomak Valley Land Trust have a contract of buy this parcel and keep it forever wild and open to the public. The campaign is nearing the $300,000 level, about 80 percent of the $370,000 needed by mid-July thanks to the many people who have pledged and donated at all levels: a huge thank you to all who have given.
Your help is needed now! Be part of the community momentum to keep this special piece of Maine protected and forever open to the public. Donate online on Facebook at Save the Lupine Field, Round Pond, or send a check to MVLT at P. O. Box 180, Waldoboro, 04572.
