We are sorry to learn the Jefferson/Nobleboro SnoPackers cancelled their planned snowmobile races, formerly scheduled for Feb. 4-5 on Damariscotta Lake ice, near the state park in Jefferson.
It especially distressing because this is the third year in row the SnoPackers have had to scrub their races due to lack of ice thick enough to bear the weight of people and equipment necessary to make this event happen.
However, as much as we’ll miss the races again this year, we applaud the decision, made for safety’s sake. Better to skip a race this year and catch it the next time around than forge ahead and run the risk of tragedy.
Given this rather strange winter we are enjoying, we encourage everyone to exercise caution, on and off the ice this year.
