Hooray for Lincoln Academy! Ever since leaving Lincoln and my hometown Damariscotta 62 years ago I have followed, through the LCN and the newsletters, their progress and expansions. With the addition of dormitories for (mostly) foreign students, Lincoln Academy joins the other dozen or so Maine Academies now expanding the horizon, for not only the local students, but the area townspeople as well.
Not until my career took me to metropolitan places, New York City, and Montreal, did I get to work with and become friends with “ferriners.” Heck, I never even ate a pizza until I got to the University of Maine.
In the last few decades, I have traveled on business, in many countries, meeting Brits, Swedes, Finns, Quebeckers, Mexicans, Jamaicans, Nepalese, Koreans and, oh yes, Chinese. These experiences, talking and working with those from different cultures, have certainly broadened my world outlook.
(I am reminded of the Li’l Abner cartoon when he and Daisey Mae are in Paris; Li’l Abner exclaims, “my, there are a lot of foreigners here!”)
Rubbing elbows with overseas students will certainly help our Maine kids gain an open perspective on the rest of the world.
