To the Editor:
Nationalizing health care has another significant element, not often noted. The new Socialist government in Britain in 1945 lost no time in nationalizing coal, steel, transport, freight, education and health. After hovering near bankruptcy for years all those mistakes were unscrambled with one exception – health.
Through many changes of government the British people have been promised improvements but never a return to private enterprise. So we should be very careful what we wish for – this could be one big mistake with no going back.
Incidentally when an element of private medical insurance was allowed back in the late 50s–one of the first groups signed up was a trade union.
