To the editor:
The town of Wiscasset is most fortunate to have an outstanding volunteer fire department. The key word is volunteer. Allowing the members to wash their vehicles at the fire station should be allowed, and the policy preventing this should be amended so the decades-old practice may continue.
This dedicated group of firefighters are only paid for the incidents to which they respond. I have no idea how many countless hours are spent training; however, I do know they are not reimbursed for their time. The cost of allowing the washing of personal vehicles at the fire station certainly won’t break the bank.
In the grand scheme of things, I don’t believe full-time employees want to wash their cars at the firehouse. In my opinion, this is not a valid argument as put forth by the town manager. No one wants to spend his or her lunch hour or break time washing his or her vehicle.
Wiscasset has many more important issues that need attention, and as far as this item is concerned, only an amendment to the existing policy needs to be addressed, and we can move on.
