To the Editor:
It became obvious to me during my 35 years of practice that community fluoridation of water supplies is not the significant factor in tooth decay reduction. I witnessed a dramatic decrease in decay over the years in my practice and community that did not have a fluoridated water supply.
Numerous studies have shown this observation to be valid not only within communities but also within countries.
Patient education in dental offices, schools and social media as well as easy and inexpensive access to supplemental fluoride are the more important factors.
Together with the mounting evidence of fluorides toxicity and the lack of choice for residents, community water fluoridation is an unacceptable strategy for decay prevention.
