To the Editor:
Congratulations to Renys. In the true American spirit, the locally based retailer has made a business decision to open a department store in downtown Portland, occupying the former L.L. Bean center-city premises on Congress Street.
Most significantly, the risk of this job-creating growth initiative was taken without the benefit of public support in the form of property-tax abatements, tax-increment financing, employee-training assistance, income-tax credits, infrastructure modifications, one-time grants or other inducements commonly sought from state and/or local governments for expansion of private enterprises.
Renys has set a great example for “the way (business) life should be.”
