To the Editor:
I must correct and clarify that portion of the Edgecomb article addressing the snow plowing issue of Spring Hill Farm Rd. (“Edgecomb to require Shore Road excavation,” LCN, 1/15/09) As written, the article is confusing and misleading.
Property owner Val Thompson did not say the town should plow up to his driveway because the road ends there. Rather, Thompson contends that the town road extends past his house and therefore, the town should plow past his house.
Further, he provided the board with minutes of the selectmen’s meeting of Jan. 31, 2005 in which the board agreed to plow the town road in front of Thompson’s house, not “as a favor supposedly,” but as normal part of town road snow plowing.
Thompson did not claim the town has “…always been plowing there…” but rather the town has plowed his driveway (aka town road) from Jan. 2005 through March 2008.
Further, in a town meeting in 1913, the town did not “…supposedly…” determine where the town road ended. Rather, it abandoned that portion of Spring Hill Farm Rd. from a point east of the Thompson house to River Rd.
Finally, the article misses the most important point – that the board and Thompson reached a cordial understanding, in that the town would plow the driveway/town road, and Thompson and the town would research the issues of where the town road ends.
