To the Editor:
It has been over two months since our lives suddenly changed and my husband found himself in the worst of circumstances: a freak accident that every carpenter dreads happened with a table saw after more 40 years of experience. His left hand was mangled and fingers were severed.
Alone on the job with no cell phone reception, he managed to “do what he had to do.” He wrapped up his hand to stop the bleeding, recovered missing fingers and started to drive to the hospital. The rest is now history…after driving to Hanna’s garage where his friend Walter works, emergency ambulance help arrived.
Guardian angels work in many ways and that day they came in all sizes and shapes to work their miracles. First we’d like to thank Walter who did more than “light Phil’s cigar” and started the 911 process, then the First Responders who stabilized the situation and took care of all the details including enlisting our daughter Tara who was driving by.
Then we were blessed to have Miles E/R staff there and ready, especially Dr Janet Fowle who gave us the ‘best chance possible of salvaging some use of his fingers by conferencing with Maine Med and Mass General. The nurses and our hospital community were there every step of the way to support and care for not only my husband, but all of our family.
A special thank you to Coves Edge staff and Lois who stayed with me until I could be with Phil, to Neil who kept an eye on things and helped get ready for Phil’s airlift to Mass, to RuthAnn who made sure I ate something and was always there for a hug, and to the many, many others. There are far too many to say thank you to for being the angels that each and every one of you were and are for everyone who needs you everyday. Just be assured we are counting our blessings in all of you!
When we came to Maine 25 years ago we searched all over to find a place to raise our children and be our home for us (now there are grandchildren and, yes, even a great grand child) Never a day goes by that we don’t thank God for helping us choose this wonderful community for our home. It is absolutely the best.
Due to the continued prayers and kindness of family, friends, and Phil’s long time customers who have become family, Phil is healing and we are making gains everyday.
Thanks to your support and love we will always be able to look back on that day of tragedy as a day when kindness and compassion came shining through.
