To the Editor:
While driving to Rangeley last Friday night we received a phone call saying that our friend, Rene Goulette’s Shop to Shore had burned to the ground. It was hard to believe.
More incredible was the fact that our property, which adjoins Rene’s, had no damage. We have been told that the fire was fully involved when it was discovered. When the fire departments arrived they worked to douse the fire and at the same time sprayed our building to prevent it from igniting.
The Bristol, South Bristol, Bremen, Newcastle, Damariscotta, and Nobleboro Volunteer Fire Departments responded. Observers reflected that all companies worked together like clockwork. This must be a result of their mutual aid training. We feel fortunate to live in an area where so many people contribute their time and talent to our local fire departments.
We express to all who participated our deepest gratitude. We are deeply saddened that Mary and Rene’s outcome could not have been the same.
