To the Editor:
In November, residents in Newcastle and Damariscotta will have an important decision to make – to vote on whether or not to continue adding fluoride to the municipal water supply. This is a significant issue that deserves the thoughtful attention of every member of the community and participation of all eligible voters.
Currently, the municipal water supply in Damariscotta and Newcastle is fluoridated. This means that if you consume food or drink which has been prepared, produced or grown with the municipal water supply, you are being medicated with fluoride.
The health effect of ingesting fluoride is an issue in and of itself. How it affects our teeth, our bodies, and our minds are all of concern. Whether or not one chooses to use fluoride should be the choice of the individual.
The most important issue at stake is that we, as citizens, have the right to choose what we ingest. When water is “treated” to contain medications such as fluoride – that right is being taken away. I believe that no one has the right to force another human being to put something into his/her body that they do not want or do not fully understand.
That is what is happening right here and now.
Adding fluoride to the public water not only jeopardizes the health and well being of the residents of Damariscotta and Newcastle, it strikes a blow to the central tenet of free societies; the freedom of choice. Do the residents of Damariscotta and Newcastle value the right to be free to control what goes into our bodies and the affects that may have on our overall health? If you say yes – then be sure to vote for no fluoride in the public water system.
It is my sincere hope that all residents in the two towns will inform themselves of this issue. I sincerely hope that you choose to cast a vote for health and well-being, a vote in support of the freedom and liberties we hold dear. I sincerely hope you vote to end the practice of fluoridation in Damariscotta and Newcastle. Please vote no.
