To the Editor:
There has been so much talk about the swine flu in the media lately. To add to the stress I recently learned that Governor Baldacci has the authority to order that all Mainers be vaccinated. When I first heard this I did not think it was possible but after diligent research I have concluded that it is true.
On Sept. 1 Governor Baldacci signed a proclamation declaring a civil emergency which in essence gives him the right to force all Mainers to get the swine flu shot.
Even if you think getting flu shot is a good idea (I do not) the problem for me is that our freedom of choice is being taken away…again. More and more… nobody, I repeat nobody is going to force me to get a flu shot.
I now wear my seatbelt because it is a good idea, not because they made it a law. I try and exercise and eat healthy cause it’s a good idea. It is frightening how much the government has invaded our lives and presumes to know what is best for me, often using the excuse that it is for the public good.
Rep. Doug Thomas, District 24 has submitted a bill that will prohibit mandatory vaccines and it goes before the legislative council on Oct. 10. I urge you to contact members of the legislative council and let them know your feelings on this vital legislation. It frightens me that we need special laws to protect ourselves from our own government, the ones who work for us!
I urge you to get educated about what is going on around us. Wake up and get involved. New York has mandated vaccines for health care workers. Is this something that you want?
I know I don’t.
