Each year at this time, as we pause to give thanks for the blessings we enjoy, we are especially thankful as we consider the letter from Waldoboro Selectman Steve Cartwright last week, and the responses he engendered this week.
We give thanks that we live in a country where the merits of saying the Pledge of Allegiance can be a matter of debate. In other countries, no such dissent is possible.
We give thanks that our freedom is such that we can even disagree on the fabric of freedom itself. Yet no matter how passionate the argument, or emotional the subject, law abiding Americans don’t have to worry about a federal knock on the door.
It’s true, freedom means little for an empty stomach, but we still live in the greatest country on earth, where it is still possible to start with nothing and through hard work and good fortune make something.
Every day of every year, we give thanks for that.
