On principle we oppose papering over problems feigning a metaphorical joining of hands and a forced singing of “Kumbaya,” but if there is ever a time to embrace a “Kumbaya” moment, this is the annual time of year to do it.
Even as our servicemen and women remain in harm’s way overseas and the problems before us as a nation and a state remains as daunting as ever, this is a good time to remind ourselves that we should savor what we have and what we have is a place in what is still the land of opportunity.
We remain a country of liberty: a country where we can vote without fear of being shot or arrested, where we are free to move about without restriction.
We remain a country where even lunatics have a right to scream their opinion.
This week as most of us sit down for an epic feast, we should give thanks that for many of us, such a repast is a trip to the grocery store away. There are too many people at home and abroad for whom such a repast remains out of reach.
