The older we get, the more we are convinced Mom was right about everything. As we have learned over the years, tuck your shirt in, eat your vegetables, and stand up straight are all proven winners.
About this time of year, just as we kids were getting into the summer swing of things, (meaning moping around, groaning about how there was always nothing to do) Mom would come rolling through and say in her best exasperated tone, “What are you doing? Go outside and play.”
She was right. Summer is no time to be indoors and this weekend in particular it seems summer launches with a vengeance.
Somerville and Westport Island wrap up town meeting season for the year and the day-long community block parties that are Waldoboro Day and the Damariscotta Pirate Rendezvous convene Saturday.
More to the point, this is the seasonal sweet spot right here. For the next 10 weeks or so, we can sample the bounty of art, music, culture, and community events that make Maine in general and Lincoln County in particular desirable destination spots.
Florida, Cape Cod, and most points in between have damn near been touristed to death, but here we still enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, slathered in small-town charm and slow-roasted by the sun.
People from all around the world literally spend their time dreaming of coming here, moving here, just being here in the paradise we call home. Now is the time to get out and enjoy it. Soon enough it will be winter again and we can complain about how cold it is.
Soon enough summer will be over, but let’s not worry about that now. Fire up the grill, break out the beverages and call up the neighbors. It’s party time.
