Well, “they” say you are never ready to have children. The “they” talking in this case are usually parents themselves, passing on a bit of hard-earned wisdom to someone whose life is about to dramatically change.
It is true that it is relatively easy to stress yourself right out of having kids. It is never the right time, there is never enough money, and the world you are bringing a new life into is always going to hell in handbasket.
However, as any parent can tell you, the rewards far outweigh the worries.
It is graduation week in Lincoln County this week and next. Our local high schools are all matriculating their senior classes. They will go out into the world, like seeds, and like seeds, some will catch immediately, some will take longer to sprout, and others will wither on the vine.
We congratulate the Class of 2014, and wish them good luck.
The world these young graduates are about to enter seems a more dangerous place than ever, but we think that is as much a function of the Information Age we live in as anything else. The world has always been dangerous. We just didn’t have 24-hour cable and social media to keep reminding us.
We believe this generation will do well in spite of the challenges they will face. Having cut their teeth on computers and cell phones, they are uniquely equipped for the future they face. They have more information at their fingertips and more possibilities before them, than the generations that preceded them.
There was a time when rock-and-roll seemed to be the greatest threat to society. Now it is music for grandparents.
The world the Class of 2014 is taking on is one their parents could have scarcely imagined when they were in school, but it is their world now, too, and they will take it into a future even they can’t imagine yet.
