The theory is humans gravitate to things like horror movies and carnival rides because most people like the pulse-pounding thrill of terror without suffering the unfortunate ill consequences that come with an actual threat.
Maybe that’s why we like Halloween so much.
Time was, ghouls and goblins were serious business and anybody with a lick of sense would stick close to hearth and home after nightfall.
Nowadays Halloween is a dress-up occasion, fit for the entire family. Probably no holiday this side of Christmas promises as much kid-friendly fun. That’s a good thing.
There are enough real-world things in this world that terrify and there will always come a time to treat those things with the seriousness they deserve.
Be on the lookout for little ghouls and goblins this weekend, and we urge those on the prowl for tricks or treats to help themselves by mixing in a few lights and reflectors after dark.
Let’s celebrate the season with a safe and successful holiday.
Happy Halloween.
