To the Editor:
Many of you will know me from my 28-year marriage to my late husband, Lee Dunning Jr. Many others will know me from my 17-year employment at Wiscasset Public Library. Many will know me from my four years with the Wiscasset Budget Committee. The point is many of you know me.
I am a hard-working, detail-oriented, honest person who stands up for what I believe is right and listens to the knowledge of others. I have lived in Wiscasset for over 34 years and I love this town.
I am running for the office of Selectmen this year. The reason is simple. There is a great deal of unrest in Wiscasset and has been for the last few years. The public does not feel that its voice is being heard or that its wishes are being followed. I would like the opportunity to listen to the people and try to enact their wishes.
I strongly believe that the public should be allowed to talk at the Selectmen’s meetings. Not for a few minutes at the beginning of the meeting, but throughout the meeting in response to items as they are discussed by the Selectmen and prior to the Selectmen’s vote.
I believe that the Selectmen should be approachable by the town’s department heads, the employees and the public.
I believe that we can disagree civilly and that harsh language and confrontational attitudes are not needed. Keeping lines of communication open is important in a small town. Selectmen are the instruments of the people, not their voice.
I would be honored to represent the citizens of Wiscasset on the Board of Selectmen. I hope you will keep me in mind when you vote on June 9.
Pamela Dunning, Wiscasset
