We are delighted to read of the volunteer effort to save the Somerville’s aging veterans memorial this week.
We are thinking about volunteers a lot this week because we have just crested what seems like the last frenzy of community activity before schools reopen next month. Over this past weekend, Bristol, Nobleboro and Somerville held their annual community celebrations and there was a blueberry festival in Damariscotta.
It wasn’t that long ago when summer had a definite duration. It kicked off Memorial Day and ended Labor Day. Things slowed down in Vacationland almost immediately upon the end of August.
Now, ahead of us, we have the Pemaquid Oyster Festival in September, followed by the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest and Regatta in October, which brings us to the serious business of an election this November.
These are just the big ticket items. Almost any given night in Lincoln County, it seems you can find something to do; a fundraiser, a community supper, a construction project, a bridge game, something.
We would be remiss if we didn’t point out that all of these things happen due to volunteers. In a very real sense volunteers make this county, and much of this state go, from local governments on down.
We owe a big thank you to those who jump in to lend a hand and an even bigger thank you to the brave souls who get out front and lead.
Across Lincoln County volunteers are very much the grease that keep the wheels going. To all of you who stepped up and lent a hand to a local effort this summer, thank you. You are part of something bigger than yourself.
