To the Editor:
Please don’t tear down Connie Curley’s old house! The diminutive 1730s era cape nestled in the historic village of Damariscotta Mills is a rare example of the type of dwelling the early colonists of our area built and lived in. One of, if not the oldest building in Lincoln County, this historic property deserves the time and consideration to make every effort to preserve it.
It’s difficult for me to understand the folks from Marblehead, Mass. wouldn’t have an awareness of the historical significance of the property when they purchased it. It’s also difficult to understand why the Design Review Board of Newcastle would so hastily decide that the antique dwelling is too far gone and so permit its demolition.
I’m sure that Connie’s old cape can be saved and restored. Let’s slow down and consider the options and alternatives there are to satisfy the owners and the community. The little house has survived 275 years for this.
