To the Editor:
We have been told by Maine Department of Transportation spokesperson Steve Bodge, that the widening, straightening and curbing of two miles of Route 129 is for reasons of “safety” and “drainage.” This is hogwash. Anyone who lives down here knows that there have been no accidents along this stretch due to road conditions (zero) and that the minor drainage problems can be accomplished in any number of smaller ways.
With all the roads in Maine that seriously do need attention, this is an unconscionable waste of taxpayer dollars, plus it will be a horrendous new addition to our small village.
Widening the road, curbing and straightening it out, will obviously speed traffic up right into the center of town where people congregate and gaze at the lovely view from the bridge. South Bristol will also end up looking like a thoroughfare.
This is nuts. These federal dollars need to be spent elsewhere.
