To the Editor:
Early in the legislative session I co-sponsored a bill that I thought, and was told by the sponsor, Sen. Brian Langley, would have made minor changes to laws necessary to conform with federal law related to regulating restaurants.
He told me the law made minor changes that were not controversial. Reading the law, one would have believed it.
Newspapers reported the law would have allowed restaurants to keep a portion of tips earned by waitstaff. Within a day of that report, I notified Sen. Langley I could not support his bill and I would vote against it. Rumors are that I support this bill.
I want to make it clear to the people of Senate District 20: I do not, and I never will support a bill that takes tips from some of the hardest working people in our community. People who work in this profession deserve every penny they earn in tips.
