Lincoln County embraces its history. More than likely most communities do, but on the pages of The Lincoln County News, we particularly enjoy the submissions of our historians, and those feature stories written by LCN journalists highlighting our heritage and accomplishments.
In that regard, for some years, we’ve also proudly published stories about Newcastle daughter, Frances Perkins, U.S. Labor Department Secretary during the Franklin Delano Roosevelt administration, and first woman Cabinet member.
We applaud Sen. David Trahan (R-Waldoboro), and Rep. Jon McKane (R-Newcastle) for coming to the fore and defending Perkins in a letter to Gov. Paul LePage, requesting he reconsider eliminating her name from the Perkins Conference Room in the Maine Dept. of Labor building.
We also applaud the Newcastle Board of Selectmen for supporting Trahan’s and McKane’s request by unanimously passing a resolution on behalf of Newcastle citizens “to pay tribute to the memory of Frances Perkins” by reinstating the Dept. of Labor conference room that bears her name.
