To the Editor:
Thanks to 65 generous donors, $15,242.26 has been raised towards the digital conversion of The Harbor Theatre, Boothbay Harbor.
However, time is running out. If the theatre can’t raise enough money ($65,000 is needed for this project), it will have to close for good after Sept. 30. Digital cinema will replace 35mm film after the Christmas holidays. Digital conversion does not increase a theatre’s revenue – it just allows the theatre to remain in business.
If we stay open, we must be able to operate through next summer, so membership renewals and screen ads can be sold. This revenue stream helps the theatre to run in the black off-season.
If the theatre closes, money in the Digital Conversion Fund will be returned to the donors. I plan to donate the theatre equipment provided by past donations, (excluding equipment claimed by the landlord) to a local group or organization so that hopefully, movies may continue to be shown in the Boothbay region.
Whatever happens, please enjoy The Harbor Theatre during our time left together.
Best regards and thanks to everyone for current and past support and for 10 great years.
Jason Sheckley, Boothbay Harbor
