To the Editor:
It saddens me greatly to report that Janet Elwin’s magnificent quilts have been removed from the Miles Hospital Gallery due to circumstances beyond our control.
It appears that there is a state fire code regarding all textiles hanging in public buildings requiring the materials must be certified flame retardant. There are retardant sprays available but they are very expensive and difficult to apply evenly.
We apologize to the public and the hospital, but mostly to Janet who has lost the opportunity to exhibit her beautiful art. I would encourage anyone reading this letter to pass this information on, as I’m sure that most quilters and textile artists are quite unaware of this restriction.
Janet Elwin can be contacted directly at 563-1064, or by e-mail at janetbelwin@gmail.com
Her quilts are truly masterworks and deserve to be admired. I am sorry that so many will now be denied that privilege.
