To the Editor:
When my home in Nobleboro sold quite suddenly this summer, it started a cascade of changes. Just before selling my house, I moved to Topsham. About the same time, Newcastle was fortunate to hire a full-time employee with municipal town clerk experience (Susan Anneley), therein substantially reducing the necessity of the planned transition training time.
So when offered, I accepted a similar part-time position with the town of Topsham. That action has clearly tabled my planned retirement but hastened my departure from the town of Newcastle. As I leave you in the most capable hands of the board of selectmen and town office team I extend my most sincere “thank you” for your support.
I came to work part time at the Newcastle Town Office in 2008. It is hard to believe that the years have flown by so quickly and so many changes have taken place. I have very much enjoyed being in the town office to meet and serve you. You have been very welcoming, friendly, and encouraging throughout my tenure. I am most appreciative.
Something that sets Newcastle apart from many of today’s governmental entities is your collective commitment to work together toward the common good. Like anywhere else, you have strongly held divergent views. Yet, those views generally get fully discussed in a civil, inclusive, and collaborative manner. This dialogue usually leads to workable, livable compromises wherein the common good is advanced.
Sometimes though the situation means “agreeing to disagree.” Even in these circumstances, Newcastle citizens endeavor to assure it occurs in an environment of mutual respect. Kudos Newcastle!
I will miss working with/for the town office team, the board of selectmen, various other boards, committees and volunteers but leave with confidence that you will continue to band together to make Newcastle the best it can be. Thank you for a great ride!
