To the editor:
Lots of people were enjoying our village this past weekend. Also, there were cars pulling out, tires squealing, folks darting across the street, stop and go every two to three vehicles. Wait time to get out of side streets was up to four minutes.
On June 14, Wiscasset residents will vote, voicing their opinion on the direction the town should take … moving forward.
People and traffic are inevitable. Traffic lights work. We will adjust; let’s not push against it. Let’s soothe the fears … we know what didn’t work. Where would we be today without the bold ideas to abolish slavery, allow gay marriage, and give women the right to vote?
The Maine Department of Transportation has evolved, studied, and invested hours into advocating for traffic reduction option 2 to relieve traffic congestion 50-plus percent, increase safety, and enhance the village. Perhaps the department uses accurate, current information. It is known that sitting traffic is bad for the roads, environment, and buildings, not to mention attitudes.
Making decisions by pointing out what didn’t or won’t work holds us hostage to what was … rather, let’s seize this opportunity and move forward.
On the nice, balmy nights that are before us, imagine sitting and enjoying Main Street, catching up with friends and neighbors, and a downtown to enjoy with our kids.
