To the Editor:
As you enter the Nobleboro dump you see two signs. One says “No dump picking.” The other says “This garbage costs you $80 a ton to throw away.” Why not designate a “dump selector” who pulls out anything any good he or she spots and puts aside and labels with an entry date and a price between $1 and $5.
Anything that remains unsold after three weeks gets tossed and recycled as scrap.
Sales of items selected would cover the dump selector’s stipend. I personally know at least three people who would jump at the opportunity to hold this non-paying position.
I’m sure someone will say, “What about liability?” Fact of the matter is Camden does this. How do they do it? I imagine they just do it. I personally am sick of liability being used as an excuse for inaction. I enjoyed recycling items from the old Nobleboro dump for more years than I’d care to count.
In these hard times I think it’s something we as a community should encourage.
