To the Editor:
Under our representative democracy, it has been my understanding that people are generally encouraged to contact their elected representatives with concerns about legislative issues. After recently corresponding with (District 51 Rep.) Jonathan McKane, R-Newcastle, to express my opinion of proposed changes to the Maine Public Employees’ Retirement System, I was shocked at his terse and rude response.
After writing two paragraphs to him, the only words of reply I received were, “And I and most of my constituents have NO retirement benefits.” (Apparently, Social Security doesn’t count.)
After working with adolescents for 32 years I am well accustomed to snide remarks and disrespect. However, they were children on the path to adulthood whose frontal cortices were not yet fully developed. Mr. McKane’s comment was so dismissive that it makes me wonder if he even read what I wrote.
Let’s hope that, in 2012, we’ll elect a representative who wishes to listen to all constituents with an open mind and heart. We need someone who treats each individual with respect and understanding.
