To the editor:
In one of President George H.W. Bush’s speeches, he referred to all the volunteer community organizations we have in America and to America’s citizens as “little points of light” when describing how we help our fellow humans without government help.
The Bristol Area Lions Club is one such “point of light,” and it is with a happy heart that we applaud those Lincoln Academy students that participated in our Lions Club Speak-out speech tournament and also those Bristol and South Bristol students who excelled academically at L.A. and received one of our four $2,000 scholarships. Much of the world news is negative, so kudos go to the majority of LA students and especially to those individuals we were lucky enough to meet as either elocutionists or honored scholarship recipients.
Of course, our “little point of light” on the Pemaquid peninsula is moving on with a Red Cross blood drive at our meeting hall, aka Willing Workers Hall, on Route 130 in New Harbor on Tuesday, June 21.
Our commitment is not only to help students, but also to do our best to serve the entire community, and sponsoring a blood drive is of paramount importance. We are a community composed of many senior citizens and non-seniors too, and some have been the recipient of blood or platelet transfusions. To call for an appointment to give a pint of blood, call 800-RED CROSS or just stop in at the Willing Workers Hall from 1-6 p.m. on June 21.
This summer, the Bristol Lions Club will be holding its annual fundraising trunk sale and flea market at the Bristol Consolidated School parking lot every Saturday in July from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Call 677-3317 for more information or to reserve a space for a $10 donation. To become a Lion “point of light,” call Walt at 677-2584, as new members are always welcome and needed.
