We almost made it all the way through this election season with very little in the way of vandalism to political signs, but it seems our luck has run out with barely three weeks to go until the election.
We reported the incidence plaguing House District 91 Jeff Evangelos last week. This week, a person or persons unknown took it upon themselves to deface signs belonging to the Susan Collins campaign.
Suffice it to say, we can’t imagine a local politician would tolerate such action by their own supporters against an opponent, and anyone stupid enough to go around doing this sort of vandalism just because is probably not going to be affected by anything we have to say.
Spray painting swastikas hither and yon is just a whole other level of moronic. We have no reason to know, but we suspect the person or persons responsible either have the most superficial understanding of what a swastika represents, or they have an extremely warped view of the political spectrum.
Either way, this sort of thing says more about the perpetrator(s) than anything else.
On the lighter side, this election year we have noticed our letters to the editor have by and large been free of the vitriol that distinguished the last three elections and we commend our letter writers for that.
We are going to accept political letters across the board for another week before the election. Anybody who would like to state their case, now is the time.
For our Oct. 30 issue, the last before this year’s election, we are going to have to limit debate. By then it will be too late to take on a candidate’s record but you are still welcome cheer on your candidate if you wish.
To those who wrote letters during this campaign season, whether it was on politics or anything else, thank you; thank you for your efforts, your interest, and your participation. We literally couldn’t do it without you.
