To the Editor:
This coming Monday is Memorial Day. Everyone should ask themselves, “What does Memorial Day mean to me?”
To some who haven’t lost a loved one in war, if there are still any left, it’s time to enjoy a three-day weekend thanks to Lord knows who decided to change the original Memorial Day date of May 30 to re-time it to fall on a Monday. What’s next America? Christmas and others?
This old veteran remembers Memorial Days of yore when everybody took part in ceremonies throughout America. Huge parades terminated at various cemeteries. Today, smaller and smaller groups honor this day, save some patriotic groups and many of us old veterans who remember WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and of course our younger veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. We all remember this day!
On this Memorial Day, I will do as I do every Memorial Day and visit the graves of veterans I knew and thank them again for their sacrifice. I know without them I wouldn’t be here writing and neither would most of America be enjoying their freedom, living in the land of the free, and of course, the home of the brave.
