To the Editor:
Two of us, Trudi Hodkins and I, had made arrangements for the past several years for what we thought was becoming an expected traditional Memorial Day observance at the Jefferson Veterans’ Memorial.
After contacting nearly every possible source, we found no one would come forward to take on the task of making arrangements for the observance. The two of us had run out of steam which we readily admitted in 2012.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26, my wife and I arrived at the Jefferson Veterans Memorial, to find a quiet, peaceful and serene setting, fronting on the Village Green and blossoming trees.
Alone, in the stillness of the afternoon, we held our personal memorial observance.
We realized our community had lost its desire to observe this solemn day. It was a time to reflect on the service our Jefferson veterans, now resting in our 26 cemeteries, had performed to assure us the freedoms each of us and our children enjoy today.
We sincerely hope individuals or a community organization will again plan a Memorial Day observance for the Town of Jefferson.
