To the Editor:
I urge a “No” vote on Question 2 Nov. 8. We do not need more gambling in Maine. The question was not settled when we established a lottery.
I know some will always gamble on anything but there is no need to encourage it. Ten percent of the population does 60 percent of the gambling and there are mostly those who cannot afford it.
All gambling is an added tax on the poor. It does not provide any goods and services but just takes money away from the many and gives it to the few. The odds always favor “the house.”
Just on the monetary view, gambling is bad. For every $1 taken in taxes, it cost the state $6 in added costs for crime, prison, welfare, etc… That is not a good exchange.
Lastly, I do not want Atlantic City and Las Vegas here. It can truly be said, in gambling the winner is the Devil.
