To the Editor:
November 11 is Veterans’ Day and this old veteran remembers when it was celebrated with much more splendor and parades, but that was then and this now; now being more or less just a day off.
Maybe it’s the times, but somehow something is missing. Could it be that each generation forgets what the previous has done? I’m guilty of that. Who ever remembers veterans of WWI, the Civil War and soon WWII? Let’s not forget “the forgotten war” – Korea. That I remember vividly.
On this day also remember all those gallant men and women who served in Vietnam and never got the accolades and respect they deserved.
This is not a letter omitting all our men and women serving now in Iraq and Afghanistan, just a request that we all remember our men and women who have served and continue to serve our great country at home and overseas.
To all our young and old veterans, I’m sure I speak for them all when I say it is an honor and privilege to serve the greatest country in the world.
When I left I told my men “It has been a privilege to serve with you,” and saluted them. They saluted back and that was that.
