To the Editor:
While Congress works to address key energy and climate challenges facing our nation, news out of Washington suggests some lawmakers are once again looking for an easy out of making the serious decisions and taking the bold actions necessary to create a new clean energy economy. This leaves me feeling uneasy.
Reportedly, some Senators are considering addressing only half the program through energy-only legislation. This proposal is nothing more than half an answer to our total energy and climate challenges. Only a comprehensive energy policy that includes a limit on carbon emissions will provide businesses with an incentive to invest in clean energy and create new jobs.
Just as President Obama addressed in the State of the Union address last week, we need to focus on creation, and clean energy legislation is an effective way to do it. As a lifelong resident of Maine, I am hopeful that our Senators will see the urgent need to address this issue fully. Anything short of that objective will leave the unacceptable status quo in place.
American innovation has always led the way to new technology and new economic engines. We are at the threshold of a new opportunity promising new industries, new jobs, and a secure energy future for our country. Now is the time for leadership.
Senator Snowe and Senator Collins should heed the countless voices here in Maine and work together on meaningful and comprehensive clean energy policies.
