To the Editor:
The Alna Volunteer Fire Department would like to encourage all Alna residents to attend the Public Hearing scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, at the Alna Meeting House at 7 p.m.
The weekend of June 7, more than 90 citizens of the Town of Alna signed a petition requesting that two articles be put on the warrant for the next Town Meeting which was, at that point in time, expected to be held on June 24. These articles were intended to determine the will of the Town (i.e. the people who live in the Town) on the complicated issue of the ownership and control of the Fire House.
It was the stated expectation of the petitioners that the issue would be decided at a Special Town Meeting on June 24. However, the Selectmen have circumvented that by instead stating their intention to hold a referendum vote at the polls on or after July 8.
June 24 is still your chance to hear both sides, ask questions, debate the issue and let both the Fire Department and Selectmen know what you think, even though it won’t come to a vote that night. Please be there so you can cast an informed vote whenever the election day comes.
