To the Editor:
According to the Maine People’s Alliance, the loss of revenue to the Dirigo Health Insurance system that would result from the repeal of the beverage tax would deprive thousands of Maine adults and children of affordable health care.
When uninsured people must go to the emergency room and workers miss work because they can’t afford medical treatment, the cost to taxpayers is more subtle than a beverage tax, but no less real.
Out-of-state beverage companies have spent close to $500,000 to get this question on our ballot. Please help our government continue its efforts to make affordable health care insurance available to all Mainers. Vote no on question #1.
