We always find August to be a somewhat bittersweet time.
It’s still summer. We still have plenty of cookouts and beach days and dog days ahead, but we can see Labor Day from here. Shortly after that, fall arrives: the next most beautiful time of the year to live here.
With fall comes the foliage, school events, the disappearance of our summer guests and the subsequent arrival of the leaf peepers.
However, those will all come in due time. For the moment it is still summer. We still have a few weeks left to savor the feeling of permanent vacation.
This weekend there are several community events around and we recommend going out and getting some community fun while it lasts.
Go out and meet the neighbors, if you somehow haven’t already, or go out and see them again if you have.
The 60th annual Olde Bristol Days will be held this weekend.
Debbie Myers makes her annual appearance in North Nobleboro, along with one of the best chicken barbecues around, and then there is the Blueberry Festival and Harvest Fair in Damariscotta.
That is just this weekend.
Next weekend there is Jefferson Community Day; Edgecomb Congregational Church hosts a lobster supper, Morris Farm’s features its annual Tour de Farms bike ride, and the Salt Bay Chamberfest kicks off Aug. 14.
All that is from a quick glance at the calendar. We are sure we are forgetting something.
It’s no exaggeration to say Lincoln County almost never lacks for something to do and this stretch run of summer is no exception. We are blessed to live here and these days are proof positive of that.
Mom was right. She almost always was. Go outside and play. You’ll be glad you did.
