To the editor:
Maritime Energy wants to install a 30,000-gallon bulk propane storage tank at its site on the corner of Route 1 and Vannah Road in Nobleboro. We do not think that this is a reasonable risk for our town. Concerned Citizens of Nobleboro is working to protect our community and urge Maritime Energy to find a safer place for their propane storage.
Bulk propane storage tanks are generally safe, but there can be accidents. These are often caused by human error. The risk is amplified by trucks that come in and out of the site to keep the tank filled. Other trucks will be loading propane for delivery. These trucks are also a dangerous presence.
Accidents can cause fires and, in the worst cases, dangerous explosions. The recommended evacuation radius is 1.3 miles. Dozens of homes, Nobleboro’s town office, Damariscotta Lake, and Pemaquid Pond are within this radius. Damariscotta Montessori School is within the radius, and Nobleboro Central School is just a half-mile outside of this radius.
The point is that there is a possibility – no matter how small – that this tank would have a dangerous impact on our community. Why put this kind of potential threat in the middle of Nobleboro near homes, roads, and the lake?
The South Portland City Council considered the presence of propane storage for a year, and they decided that any propane storage tanks should be over a thousand feet from any buildings, homes, or roads. Nobleboro can do the same. Maritime Energy can build a new storage tank – but it should be in a remote area, not at one of the busiest intersections in Nobleboro.
The Nobleboro Planning Board will hold a public hearing on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at Nobleboro Central School so that we all have a chance to voice our opinions on this plan. Will you join us to oppose a 30,000-gallon propane tank on Route 1? Nobleboro residents and others can come to learn about the project, ask questions, and voice their opinions.
You may also join Maritime Energy and the Nobleboro Planning Board for a site visit at 6 p.m. on Sept. 8 (before the hearing) if you wish to learn more.
